Survival and Cause-Specific Mortality of Adult Female Mottled Ducks in East-Central Florida

Abstract: An understanding of survival and underlying causes of mortality is essential to the development of effective management strategies for the mottled duck (Anas fulvigula) in Florida. From radiotelemetry data we estimated season‐specific survival rates for the entire annual cycle, cause‐specific mortality rates, and annual survival rates. We also tested for variation in survival in relation to year and period of the annual cycle. Our results suggest a strong temporal influence on survival of adult female mottled … Show more

“…Overall, our annual survival estimates are lower than any other previously estimated in Texas (Stutzenbaker ; Haukos ,; Rigby and Haukos ) or in Florida (Bielefeld and Cox , Varner et al ). However, estimated annual survival rates had 95% confidence intervals that overlapped estimates calculated using band‐recovery data (50.9%, 95% CI = 48.6–53.3; Haukos ).…”

“…The most supported model included periods of harvest, with lowest seasonal survival during the general waterfowl season. Similarly, several studies have reported elevated mortality rates 1 August−30 December (Bielefeld and Cox , Wehland ). These dates coincide with molt, the general waterfowl season, and special seasons for other waterfowl (i.e., teal and wood duck [ Aix sponsa ]) that occur within the mottled duck range.…”

“…High rates of site fidelity also have been found in harlequin ducks ( Histrionicus histrionicus ; Iverson and Esler ) and urban Canada geese ( Branta canadensis ; Groepper et al , Balkcom ). Bielefeld and Cox (), however, reported that 20–56% of female mottled ducks captured in rural areas of the Upper St. Johns River Basin in east‐central Florida moved to urban habitats in response to reduced wetland habitat availability in rural areas during a prolonged drought. Use of atypical habitats by ducks is sometimes correlated with decreased availability of wetland habitats (Derksen and Eldridge , Giroux ).…”
