Survival trends for patients with retinoblastoma between 2000 and 2018: What has changed?

Abstract: Introduction: Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most common primary intraocular cancer of childhood. Over the last few decades, a variety of techniques and treatment modalities emerged that improved the survival and ocular salvage rate of patients with RB. We investigated the relative survival trends of patients with RB from 2000 to 2018 by using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database.Design: Retrospective database review. Methods:We extracted data from SEER 18 from 2000 to 2018. All patients… Show more

“…The age-adjusted incidence, limited-duration prevalence rates, incidence-based mortality rate ( 17 , 18 ), and relative survival (RS) ( 19 , 20 ) were calculated using SEER*Stat software, version 8.4.0 (Surveillance Research Program, National Cancer Institute). We calculated the annual percentage change (APC) by fitting a simple linear model, performing regression on the logarithm of the yearly age-adjusted rates, and thereafter, using slope transformation to calculate the APC ( 21 ).…”

“…Treatment Treatment modalities for Rb have changed rapidly over the past decade [40] . and the survival of many Rb cases that used to die in the past has improved in recent years [3,[57][58][59] . In general, the available treatment options for Rb include surgery (including enucleation and pars plana vitrectomy); focal therapies (including cryotherapy, laser photocoagulation, and transpupillary thermotherapy); chemotherapy (including intravenous chemotherapy, intra-arterial chemotherapy, and intravitreal chemotherapy), and radiotherapy (including plaque brachytherapy and external beam technique) [16] .…”
