Survival Trends of Patients With Surgically Resected Gastric Cardia Cancer From 1988 to 2015

Abstract: Background: The incidence of gastric cardia cancer (GCC) patients has been increasing, while the survival trends of GCC patients over time remains unclear. Thus, the aim of our study was to determine the survival trends of GCC patients over time using a population-based data in the United States. Methods: A total of 9044 surgically resected GCC patients during 1988 to 2015 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database were identif… Show more

“…This result is also similar to that in other studies[ 33 ]. According to the studies performed by authors from Western countries[ 34 , 35 ], the number of tumors in the upper third is increasing each year, which is also similar to the result obtained by some researchers from Asia[ 36 ]. It is estimated that the change in location may be caused by risk factors, as it is speculated that changes in the location may be caused by related risk factors, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, smoking, drinking alcohol, and obesity.…”

“…As reported by many researchers in Western countries, the number of proximal GC cases is increasing year by year, and a few studies have also observed similar results in Asian countries. Since proximal GC has more aggressive biological characteristics than distal GC, the prognosis of proximal GC is worse than that of distant GC[ 20 - 22 ]. The study by Gao et al[ 23 ] showed that in proximal GC, there is no significant difference in prognosis between patients with Borrmann type III disease and LBVI (+) and those with Borrmann type IV and LBVI (-).…”

“…Long et al [31] found that the increased lymph node removal and chemoradiotherapy (CRT) contributed to improve the survival rate of GCC patients. And other various risk factors affecting the prognosis of these patients had been reported too, including sex, age, smoking, alcohol, histological type and TNM stage [32][33][34].…”
