Abstract: Resistance to vancomycin is infrequent in Cuba, as opposed to a high level of resistance to aminoglycosides, which may be indicative of treatment failures. The microbiology laboratory is a cornerstone of Enterococcus infection surveillance, along with ongoing monitoring of the susceptibility of these infections to antimicrobial drugs at a time when resistance of this microorganism is on the rise.

“…In a previous recent report from nosocomial infections surveillance in the "Octavio de la Concepción y la Pedraja" Hospital from Cuba, enterococci have been identified as an important nosocomial pathogen causing bacteremias, urinary tract infections, wound infections, and other clinical pediatric infections [8]. Here we presented data about molecular determinants of antibiotic resistance and clonal relationship of E. faecalis isolates that had caused infections in this pediatric hospital.…”

“…Most isolates were collected from pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) (18%), surgery ward (16.3%), community (16.3%), neonatology ward (14.5%) and urology ward (14.5%). Clinical diagnosis of patients from both hospitalized and non-hospitalized children were as follows: surgical wounds infections, urinary tract infections, septicemia, otitis media, abscesses, vaginitis, catheter tip infection, endotracheal tube infection, meningitis and other infections [1,3,5,[8][9][10].…”
