Susceptibilities of species of the Bacteroides fragilis group to 10 antimicrobial agents

Abstract: A total of 94 clinical isolates of the Bacteroides fragilis group was tested for susceptibility to metronidazole, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, cefoxitin, cefotetan, cefmetazole, moxalactam, mezlocillin, amoxicllin-clavulanic acid, and imipenem. All the strains tested were susceptible to imipenem, metronidazole, amoxicillinclavulanic acid, and chloramphenicol. The rate of resistance to clindamycin was 21%. The results of this study demonstrate a difference in resistance rates from one species of the B. fragili… Show more

“…The one isolate of Bacteroides fragilis with a metronidazole MIC of 8 mg/I was from Portugal and the two with metronidazole MICs of 4 mg/1 were from Germany and Austria. Only one isolate was resistant to chloramphenicol, in agreement with a report of rarity of such resistance from Spain (14).…”

“…This is higher than the rate of 3 % reported from Spain (14). Although no results for mezlocillin were reported in the studies from the USA (7,15,16), on the basis of results for piperacillin it would seem that resistance was again more common in the USA (11-16 % with piperacillin MICs > 64 mg/1).…”

“…Mays and colleagues (72) (27,32,35,105) are considerably lower than our own values (see Table 1 (18,38,(41)(42)(43)(44)(45)95), Germany (49,55), Italy (16,90), Poland (65), Russia (13), Spain (12,67), Turkey (111), Switzerland (125), and the United Kingdom (50). A perusal of the articles with English abstracts was undertaken both to obtain data regarding antibiograms from foreign hospitals and to determine the kinds of techniques used in anaerobic susceptibility testing in other countries.…”

“…Variations in proportions of species could not account for the outbreaks of resistance to clindamycin and to cefoxitin, since there was no significant difference in the proportions of the various species during the years 1979, 1982, 1985 and 1987. Until 1988, both imipenem and amoxicillinclavulanic acid were able to inhibit all strains of the Bacteroides fragilis group (17). In 1989 we detected the emergence of imipenem resistance in the Bacteroides fragilis group and such strains are still being isolated in 1991, so we believe that this observation is important.…”
