Susceptibility to measles, mumps, and rubella in 5-year-old children in Flanders, Belgium

Abstract: The data show considerable susceptibility to mumps and measles in 5-year-old children, confirming a previously conducted seroprevalence study (2006). Both advantages and disadvantages of shortening or enlarging the vaccine schedule are discussed.

“…These findings may be interpreted as more exposure between boys, especially face-to-face contact with high exposure, and exposures overcome vaccineinduced protection. [17][18][19][20][21] Furthermore, the seroprevalence and GMCs among children aged 2 to 3 years in the northern region were lower than those among children in the southern and central regions. The reasons may be complex, such as the economic level of the region, MuV coverage, and different contact rates.…”

“…Thirdly, numerous ELISA kits are commercially available and have been used in previous studies investigating anti-mumps IgG seroprevalence [36, 13]. However, the cutoff value for anti-mumps IgG levels measured using these kits is not standardized.…”

“…However, the cutoff value for anti-mumps IgG levels measured using these kits is not standardized. In the present study, we followed the manufacturer’s instructions to determine the IgG levels as positive, but other studies used different quantitative ELISA values with the same Enzygnost ® ELISA kit (Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics) [6]. Therefore, direct comparison of age-specific mumps IgG seroprevalence is not conclusive.…”
