Biodiversitas 22: 2511-2518. This paper presents a case study of agroforestry (AF) practices and challenges in Mt. Merapi risk and hazard-prone area of Indonesia. AF has been practiced by farmers in Mt. Merapi risk and hazard-prone area from older generation. Each area in Mt. Merapi has different types of AF such as agrisilviculture, silvopasture, and agrosilvopasture. In the village of Glagaharjo, Yogyakarta, this system has been used for land restoration or conservation. 139 AF adopters were chosen from 269 respondents that have been randomly interviewed from four different areas around Mt. Merapi. Statistical descriptive method using values of mean and percentage were used. Additionally, multinomial Logistic regression was utilized to understand the model. The findings of the study show that the trend of AF is increasing, especially in Glagaharjo, after the 2010 eruption. AF systems are also found to be practiced for mitigation strategies in facing Mt. Merapi hazards and risk, especially for crop protection, and land and water conservation. Promoting AF as one of the coping strategies in facing Mt. Merapi hazards and risk is important as indicated by the results of this study.

The ambiguity and polysemy of the concept of sustainability is a problem often faced by researchers. The existence of definitions that are not operative, diverse and sometimes contradictory represents a difficulty for the election of a suitable concept of sustainability. Even most of the research works whose title includes the term sustainability do not define what it is, which eventually, constitutes a methodological error.This leads the researchers to avoid defining sustainability, or to study it indirectly through the study of social and ecological variables of certain systems. The present work analysed the meanings conveyed by the concept of sustainability according to researchers. The uses that researchers make of the term sustainability were employed to reveal such meanings. Four uses were identified, which allowed the identification of four meanings of the concept of sustainability. This concluded that the meanings of the concept of sustainability are neither many nor as ambiguous as other authors point out, and that this classification of uses and meanings could be employed to avoid frequent errors made by researchers.

Sustainable development of small-scale horticulture farming is very much determined by how these farmings develop and organized into an integrated agriculture cluster area which aims at fulfilling human needs, equitable distribution of economic benefits, and participation of farmers and rural people in the dynamics of development. Indonesia has adopted it as policy but with limited evidence of successful implementation because of the ecosystem for agriculture cluster area development not yet existed. Despite the ecosystem not yet developed, small-scale farmers continue to manage their farming to support their livelihood. In this context, there is a need to develop an alternative enabling framework based on an understanding of the dynamics of horticulture farming. The objectives of this research are to understand the dynamics of the red onion horticulture farming, assessing key factors affecting farming management, and identify elements of a framework for developing integrated small-scale red onion farming cluster area based on the key factors identified. A mix research method was applied: an in-depth interview and survey. The results of the research indicated that the following key factors affecting the dynamics of small-scale red onion farming: (1) market, product distribution, and price fluctuation; (2) provision of agriculture extension services and consideration to use inputs; (3) existence and functionality of farmers' group (organization); (4) source of capital and the used of financial service industry; (5) supports from government program; (6) infrastructures to support farming activities (in term of farms access road and water); (7) mutually beneficial synergy and partnership among the stakeholders; and (8) digital platform to facilitate interaction among stakeholders. These key factors would form the basis to develop an alternative framework for integrated agriculture are development.
