Sustainable livelihood approach towards enhanced management of rural resources

Abstract: This research utilises the sustainable livelihood approach to evaluate the livelihood assets and resources and identify key challenges and development opportunities in a village in Southern Lebanon. Primary data using quantitative (structured questionnaire) and qualitative (semi-structured interview) methods were collected. “…The rural sector strategies of governments in developing countries mostly focus on the use of natural resource-based livelihood sources as a mechanism to encourage people to move away from the harmful exploitation and degradation of the natural resources (IMM, 2005; Ayana et al , 2021). A livelihood is sustainable when it can cope with and recover from stresses and shocks and maintain or enhance its capabilities and assets both now and in the future, while not undermining the natural resource base (Massoud et al , 2016). Now, the world needs approaches that go beyond word into action and ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) approaches are identified as solutions that could be used to fight climate change-related issues (Nyangoko et al , 2022).…”

“…This framework has also been used to identify the determinants for livelihood diversification in rural entities; including shocks like conflict, natural catastrophes and political instability (Ayana et al , 2021). Moreover, trends and changes like population or demographic shifts, environmental change, technology transfer, trade patterns and access to assets identified as key factors (Massoud et al , 2016). With a growing number of alternative off-farm ESLD activities in rural economies, like those available in Sri Lanka, little is known about the influence of the SLA pillars over ESLD activities.…”

“…The sustainable livelihood program (SLP) also known as sustainable livelihood approach (SLA) by the other authors, is not a new concept. The concept founded 30 years ago through the collaborative efforts of different countries and World Bank who are focusing on developing programs and projects for social protection that could aid the marginalized people around the globe, creating sustainable employment to each community [1] [2]. According to Department of Social Welfare Development (DSWD), the evolution of SLP first started in 1993 as Self-Employment Assistant Program Kaularan (SEAP-K) also known as a micro-credit program and the Philippine government so far already invested 20 billion Pesos in this endeavor with the goal to improve the economic performance of those who are below the poverty line [3].…”

“…It is also suggested that the SLA can be used to enhance the management of rural resources (Massoud, Issa, El-Fadel, & Jamali, 2016), which also give insights to people living in a fragile ecological environment. Storms, floods and droughts have negative effects on household income and expenditure, and households with higher expenditure and equal expenditure distribution are more resilient to natural disasters, micro-credit access, internal remittances and social allowances (Arouri, Nguyen, & Youssef, 2015).…”
