Sustainable Machining Approach by Integrating the Environmental Assessment Within the CAD/CAM/CNC Chain

Abstract: International audienceThis paper reports on a sustainable machining approach based on dynamic environmental assessment integration through the CAD/CAM/CNC chain. To achieve this objective, the framework for supporting the environmental assessment features key environmental indicators and simplified LCA database. Key environmental indicators are composed of ‘environmental metrics’ and ‘environmental impacts’. To implement the environmental assessment, cutting data are first extracted from STEP-NC file, a standa… Show more

“…We identified the following research gaps from the presented literature, which we aim to tackle with the proposed method. Andriankaja et al (2015) develop a concept that uses STEP NC as a source of information to optimize the CAM chain. While building on the same basic principles, this research focuses on improving the quality and reliability of the ecological indicators to use them as control parameters.…”

“…Analyzing the literature relating to the programming of CNC machines, it can be seen that not much attention has been paid to methods for automating this process. In the work Andrankaja et al [5], authors present the decision support method in CAD/CAM, based on analysis of the data recorded in the NC code. Zhou and Wu [6] focused on developing a method supporting data exchange between various CAD/CAM systems, based on the universal data format "stl", as a way to improve CNC programming.…”

“…Due to this, there are a possibility to shorten this process because a typical, individual approach for manufacturing such tooling becoming timeconsuming and inefficient. Moreover, the development of tools available in CAx systems in recent years and their integration with PLM solutions has resulted in more and more manufacturing companies willing to implement solutions that accelerate and integrate the implementation of complex engineering tasks in the design process [2,3]. This approach is very popular in the field of CAD tasks, however, it is also increasingly implemented in the area of preparation of the process of manufacturing and programming CNC machines (CAM area).…”

“…Moreover, analysing the literature relating to the programming of CNC machines, it can be seen that not much attention has beenpaid to methods forautomating of CAM programming process. Most recent research mainly concerns the improvement of the manufacturing process itself. An example would be the study by Andrankaja et al [22], in which the decision support method in CAD/CAM design is described based on analysis of the data recorded in the NC code. In the opinion of Zhou and Wu [23], an important problem is the exchange of data between different CAD and CAM systems.…”
