Sustainable productive intensification for family farming in developing tropical countries

Abstract: In the past, agriculture was directed to satisfying human needs. Nowadays, it is directed to meeting the markets, forcing the peasantries to adapt to this condition. As a result, family farmers are multifaceted, incorporating both subsistence and market-oriented production. Traditional farming systems have been challenged since there is a pressure for the intensification of these systems. Then, it is important that scientific research about them goes on to recognize that many family farmers use limited resourc… Show more

“…Based on the fact that each level of management (low, intermediate and high) has its own set of restrictions to the limitations imposed by the environment, the currently used criteria (originally developed for the high management level) (Lepsch et al., 2015) were adapted in order to fit the characteristics of the low and intermediate management levels, as shown in Table 1. Adaptations were based on the 45 years of authors’ experience in the study region considering the reality that these farmers face daily (Taveira, 2018; Taveira, Menezes, Teixeira, & Curi, 2018; Taveira, de Carvalho, Teixeira, & Curi, 2019).…”

“…Food production can be obtained by the organic system, free of physical, biological or chemical contaminants (Martinelli & Cavalli, 2019). Family farming is appropriate for a sustainable production since it allows greater product diversification and integration of plant and animal activities (Carmo, 1988;Taveira et al, 2019).…”

“…The world population is estimated to reach ∼9.735 billion people by 2050 (United Nations, 2019). Associated with the pressure for agriculture to meet the needs of human development, it is necessary to implement sustainable agricultural practices that increase productivity integrated with conservation measures (Taveira et al, 2019). The current productivity of important crops such as soybean is affected by phosphorus (P) deficiency in acidic soils since P plays a key role in the symbiotic capacity of nitrogen (N 2 ) fixation (Sulieman and Tran, 2017;Wang et al, 2020;Jaiswal et al, 2021).…”
