Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems: Themes of Public Perception—A Case Study

Abstract: Climate adaptation measures address the challenges that densification and climate change impose on the urban environment. Sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS) constructs include the introduction of natural elements, such as riparian buffers, vegetative filters, rain beds, water spills, watermark filters, retainers and dams, and are an integral part of these climate adaptation measures. SUDS are commonly undertaken at a municipal level in Norway but, unfortunately, the implementation of SUDS projects has la… Show more

“…How the use of space is prioritized in urban areas is often a source of conflict [22]. At the municipal level within Norway, SUDS projects both proposed and undertaken have at times received strong public resistance [23][24][25][26]. Gaining local community support for SUDS requires a greater understanding of public priorities and expectations in both the functions of SUDS and engaging the public to build consensus.…”

“…This study is a follow-up on two previous studies on SUDS projects in Trondheim. The first study investigated themes of public perception of SUDS management using the brook Blaklibekken as a study case [26]. The second study investigated the ongoing brook restoration of Fredlybekken, which has been partially stalled due to local resistance [37].…”

“…Reducing pollution flow into waterways has improved water quality, which is good for public health and aquatic ecosystems [6]. SUDS has strengthened climate resilience through improved drainage systems and flood mitigation capacities [7]. Additionally, SUDS calls for increased public participation and knowledge, which enhances instruction on sustainable water management techniques [8].…”

“…grow compared to previous censuses as it reached 83.5% in 1992 and 86.6% in 2002. According to the above, the progressive decrease in the rural population stands out both in terms of percentage and absolute terms [7]; these antecedents provide a signal of the changes in land use and the associated modification of the infiltration and runoff conditions of rainwater [8][9][10].…”
