Waste generation and waste management are critical environmental issues faced by countries all over the world. Furthermore, there are greater environmental, economic, and social demands on firms to reduce the environmental impacts due to environmental problems brought about by their operating activities. There is a current debate as to the financial implications of waste management expenditure on waste reduction targets. This study examines the relationship between waste management expenditure on waste reduction targets, and the impact of waste reduction targets on firms' profitability. This study used the quantitative method that utilizes the multiple regressions method to analyses data from selected South African Johannesburg Stock Exchange's (JSE) Socially Responsible Index (SRI) listed manufacturing and mining firms for ten years (2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016). The study tests if there is a relationship between waste management expenditure and waste reduction targets, as well as the impact of waste reduction targets on firms' profitability. Results show that waste reduction targets have a positive, but insignificant, correlation on the profitability of firms, and also indicate that there is a relationship between waste management expenditure and waste reduction targets. The study recommends that firms should focus more on minimizing waste generation to reduce costs.

Os problemas atuais e futuros relacionados a má gestão dos resíduos sólidos urbanos (RSU) tem incentivado a busca pela gestão integrada destes resíduos por meio da implementação de políticas públicas por todo o mundo. No Brasil, apesar dos municípios grandes estarem se adequando mais rapidamente a política nacional de resíduos sólidos, é nos municípios pequenos que está concentrado a maioria da população e, consequentemente, a maior parte dos RSU. Assim, este trabalho criou um modelo de auxílio a decisão aos municípios menores de 100 mil habitantes na busca pela gestão integrada por meio da aplicação da ferramenta de tomada de decisão multicriterial TOPSIS baseados em dados adaptados de avaliação do ciclo de vida (LCA). Foi observado que a implementação de alternativas baseadas no tratamento biológico é preferível em relação a implementação de tratamentos térmicos. Apesar desses resultados, o incremento de critérios nesse modelo, assim como a aplicação do LCA no próprio local ou em plantas de porte semelhante traria resultados mais confiáveis.

Abstract:A decision support concept (DSC) for sustainable management of the bottom trawl fleet was created in line with ecosystem-based management. It is based on principles that integrate ecological, social and techno-economic aspects of trawl fisheries in a multicriteria analysis approach. For the sake of greater transparency and improved stakeholder participation, elements of the proposed multicriteria models were discussed, generated and evaluated in collaboration with designated experts from four stakeholder groups: fishers, environmentally focused non-governmental organizations, fisheries scientists and government representatives. The proposed DSC management could facilitate management and assist decision makers in adequately using data and scientific advice to shape management strategies and related policies for the bottom trawl fleet. It may also assist in finding compromise solutions based on deliverables from the multicriteria analysis, while taking stakeholder requirements into account by using the multicriteria Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluations (PROMETHEE) methods. The final decision is then based on a vast amount of knowledge and relevant information collected from different sources. The proposed DSC represents a novel approach to fishery fleet management and assists in systematizing management processes and instruments to make it operational at the strategic level. The method was applied to the Adriatic bottom trawl fishery, and the obtained results confirmed its managerial potential in the strategic decision-making process, aimed at improving conventional management, while considering the specific requirements of an ecosystem-based approach and ensuring stakeholder participation.Keywords: sustainable fisheries management; decision support concept; ecosystem-based approach; bottom trawl fleet; strategy planning tool for the Adriatic fishing fleet
