Sustaining hope: A narrative inquiry into the experiences of hope for nurses who work alongside people living with HIV in Ghana

Abstract: Aim In this research, we explored how nurses working in HIV care in Ghana live and work with hope. “…Nurses and midwives play a critical role in providing hope to their patients. Our study is one of two other studies (LeMay, 2014;Puplampu, 2017;Puplampu et al, 2020) that make sense of how participants (i.e., teachers and nurses) in the helping professions use personally meaningful and relevant hope-focused practices and strategies (LeMay et al, 2008) in their interactions. Nurses and midwives are the main workforce to support HIV care in West-Saharan Africa and for that matter Ghana.…”

“…Tutton et al ( 2009 ) point out that hope is regarded as an important concept in nursing. Although these seminal studies demonstrate how important hope and hoping is as a therapeutic tool, very little research has been published that adds to our understanding of how those in the helping professions like nurses and midwives, use hope in their everyday interactions with the exception of Puplampu's ( 2017 ) research, which built on LeMay's ( 2014 ) work with educators.…”

“…The setting, plot, characters and main event of each storyline were identified and a title was applied to capture the main focus of the story (Murray & Sools, 2015). Within each story the underlying narrative was then identified as ‘a means of viewing experiences’ (Puplampu et al, 2020, p. 881). Grossoehme and Lipstein’s (2016) trajectory approach was applied (Grossoehme & Lipstein, 2016).…”
