West Sumatra province has three sweet potato's central regions, one of its is in Solok regency which is named Gunung Talang region. Farmers in this region have planted sweet potato for a long time as a secondary crop in lowland after lowland rice being harvested. Some of them planted sweet potato in upland. Sweet potato farming is an important source of income for the farmers. We have conducted a survey research in Gunung Talang region from September to November 2018. The objectives of research were to overcome the value of inputs and output of local sweet potato farming, and to analyze the farmers' sweet potato farming locally and financially. We used a purposive sampling method to select the farmers' organizations to be surveyed considering the large area of its members' sweet potato farming. The research respondents were the members of four farmers' organizations (Karya Tani 36 members, Batu Data 36 members, Karya Sari 32 members, and KWT Karya Tani 24 members). The primary data were collected through direct interview with the respondents and direct observation to their sweet potato farming. The secondary data were found through related institutions, i.e. West Sumatra Assessment Institute for Agricultural Technology, Agricultural Office of Solok regency, and Extension Office of Gunung Talang district. Results showed that the real total cost of the farmers' sweet potato farming in Gunung Talang region was IDR 12,358,655 per hectare. This cost would increase into IDR 24,635,564 per hectare if we calculated the land revenue, interest on working capital, depreciation, rent paid for leased land, and inputed value of family labor. The average yield of the farmers' sweet potato farming was 22,550 kg per hectare and its price was IDR 2,300 per kg so that the total revenue was IDR 51,865,000 per hectare per planting season. The gross income gained by the farmers from sweet potato farming per hectare per planting season in Gunung Talang region was IDR 39,506,345 and the net income was IDR 27,229,436 with R/C ratio 2.08, and B/C ratios based on full cost basis and cash cost basis were 1.11 and 2.20, respectively. It showed that the sweet potato farming in Gunung Talang region, West Sumatra, Indonesia was financially profitable and might have been a main source of income for the farmers.

Food crops have a strategic role in agricultural development, covering food security growth, opening up employment opportunities, and income sources in regional and national economies. This research aims to determine the relationship patterns of sweet potato farming production factors. This research utilized a quantitative approach with the survey method. The data were obtained through questionnaires, and the sampling method used a census of 348 respondent farmers in six sweet potato center villages. The Maximum Probability Estimation frontier 4.1 method was employed to calculate the technical efficiency of sweet potato farming. The results showed that the production factors significant at the trust level of 99 percent, 90 percent, and positive value for sweet potato production in Lamongan Regency, Indonesia, were land area production, Urea fertilizer, Phonska fertilizer, ZA fertilizer, and SP36 fertilizer. The technical efficiency attainment level of sweet potato farming was very high, indicating that sweet potato farming in the research was efficient, with an average technical efficiency of 0.90 percent. The achievement level of allocative efficiency on sweet potato farming was relatively low, implying that sweet potato farming was inefficient, with an average localized efficiency of 0.50 percent. The economic efficiency of sweet potato farming was very low, depicting inefficient sweet potato farming, with an average economic efficiency of 0.48 percent. Therefore, sweet potato farmers must optimize land use, ZA, Urea, SP36, and Phonska to produce sweet potatoes optimally to support food security.

A field experiment was conducted at Rivers Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (RIART), Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Nigeria with the objective of evaluating the influence of seedbed types and vine harvesting time on shoot and tuber yields of sweet potato and make recommendations for optimal and sustainable production. The treatments consisted of three seedbed types (ridge, flat, and mound), and four vine harvesting time (8, 12, 16 and 20 weeks after planting). The experiment was laid out as a 3 x 4 in factorial arrangement fitted into a randomized complete block design (RCBD) and replicated three times. The results revealed that planting of sweet potato on ridge produced the highest root tuber yield followed by mound seedbeds; planting on flat seedbed produced the highest shoot (vine) and lowest tuber yields. While planting on ridge seedbed and harvesting the vines 16 weeks after planting (when about 80% of the growth phase of the plant was completed) produced optimum shoot yield which could be used as fodder with no significant effect on root tuber yield. In general, vine harvesting during active growth phase of the sweet potato plant seriously depressed tuber yield more than it affected shoot production. These results therefore stand as our recommendations for sweet potato production in the South-south zone of Nigeria.
