Sweetpotato whitefly resistance to insecticides in Hawaii: intra‐island variation is related to insecticide use

Abstract: Susceptibility to acephate, methomyl, and permethrin was determined with laboratory bioassays of field-collected adults from 15 populations of the B biotype of sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Homoptera:Aleyrodidae), from Hawaii. Comparisons at the LCso showed up to 24-fold resistance to acephate, 18-fold resistance to methomyl, and 4-fold resistance to permethrin. Analysis of variance showed significant intra-island variation in susceptibility to each insecticide, but no significant variation… Show more

“…Attempts to manage B. argentifolli with the use of insecticides are not always successful, and overdependence on insecticides has resulted in resistant populations to selected classes of insecticides (Omer et al 1993, Crowder et al 2006. Insecticide failures in managing whiteßies in cucurbits and a recent trend toward more sustainable production practices and organic farming in Hawaii have caused a need for alternative pest management strategies.…”

“…Although tephritid fruit flies have not been shown to develop pesticide resistance, aphids (Hollingsworth et al, 1994 and1997), whiteflies (Omer et al, 1993) and leaf miners (Purcell et al, 1995) have developed resistance under constant foliar pesticide pressure in Hawaii. Even parasitoid-host complexes have shown resistance to the pesticides commonly used against foliar feeders such as leaf miners (Rathman et al 1995.…”
