Syhnthesis of Chitosan Modified Polyurethane Foam for Adsoprtion of Mercury (Ii) Ions

Abstract: Mercury from the traditional gold mining activities in Aceh Jaya Regency causes water source and thus residents are exposed to mercury metals. In organic and inorganic conditions, mercury is toxic to the human body, causes damage to the nerve system, kidney failure, heart failure, blood pressure disorders, and damage to the immune system. The problem of mercury contamination can be chemically solved in various ways. This research uses polyurethane foam to adsorb mercury from water. The adsorption and selectivi… Show more

“…The reduction in the hydrogen bonds freed the molecules for intermolecular interaction. The intermolecular attraction induced between similar molecules resulted in the formation of the agglomerate [38]. properties confirmed the bond formed between the -OH and isocyanate, as observed in the FTIR results.…”

“…After that, the MDI was added dropwise at the same rotation speed and temperature for another 20 s until the air bubbles were formed. The ratio of castor oil and MDI was 2:1, as adding more or less MDI than the stated ratio resulted in a deformed foam structure [22]. The modified COPUF with zeolite, bentonite, and activated carbon filters were respectively denoted as Z/COPUF, B/COPUF, and AC/COPUF.…”

“…This study used castor oil as the bio-polyol feed because, unlike many other vegetable oils, castor oil possesses active secondary hydroxyl groups, which can react with the isocyanate to form a urethane linkage [15]. Due to its easy shape-tailoring, the addition of water into the polyol and diisocyanate mixture is enough to get the polyurethane foam (PUF) [22]. This material can appear in an open or closed cell structure with a wide range of rigidity (rigid, semirigid, and flexible foam) [19].…”

“…The use of chitosan coater is the right alternative, it is effective and safe for health (Hardjito, 2006). Chitosan is famous for its properties that can be used as adsorbents (Darmadi et al, 2018;Rahayu & Purnavita, 2017), coater (Khalifaa et al, 2017), antimicrobials (Friedman & Juneja, 2010) etc.…”
