Symbol error rate analysis for M-QAM modulated physical-layer network coding with phase errors

Abstract: Abstract-Recent theoretical studies of physical-layer network coding (PNC) show much interest on high-level modulation, such as M -ary quadrature amplitude modulation (M -QAM), and most related works are based on the assumption of phase synchrony. The possible presence of synchronization error and channel estimation error highlight the demand of analyzing the symbol error rate (SER) performance of PNC under different phase errors. Assuming synchronization and a general constellation mapping method, which maps … Show more

“…where P k is the transmission power of the k-th user, and ICI k is the total interference of user k. In addition, there is a relationship of P s = 1 − (1 − P B ) b between the BER P B and the symbol error rate P s provided that b is even number [11]. In addition, assuming one packet contains N s symbols, so the number of error symbols is N e = N s P s .…”

“…Note that in each decision loop, only one term is subtracted in an order defined in (11), and the current request is accepted if the criterion is satisfied, then the scheme go on to the k + 1-th decision loop. After all handover calls have been processed, different new calls will be processed similarly, i.e.…”

“…The above existing works did not consider phase variations that may result from synchronization errors. In our preliminary work [24], we focused on SER of PNC with deterministic phase deviations. In this paper, we focus on random phase deviations due to random synchronization errors.…”

“…Phase errors may results from different impairments such as channel estimation errors and carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation errors. The effects of phase errors on the performance of other modulation techniques, such as OFDM, have been investigated in several works as [5], [6].…”
