Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Multilevel Inverter Structures with Reduced Number of Switching Devices

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyze the operation and design of symmetrical and asymmetrical multilevel inverter structures with reduced number of switching devices. In this study, the term of conventional inverter is defined as a single cascaded inverter. Specifically, the inverter operates in three complete loops and only produces 2-level and 3-level of output voltages. Usually, cascaded structure suffers from the high total harmonic distortion. Thus, by considering multilevel structure of inverter, low … Show more

“…The current and voltage fluctuations are undesired behavior which should be improved since they adversely affect the losses and heating effects in the system load above the acceptable limits and consequently decreases the expected life of the battery in which the energy created by PV systems is stored. It also makes the regulation of the regulator worse since it generates a distortion not only in the current and voltage waves at the output of the regulator but also at its input which requires further control processors and makes its control more sophisticated and the dynamic behavior of the PV supply system unstable and less efficient [13][14][15][16].…”

“…The THD of the output voltage is changed from 28.9% to 2.92% for the modulation index from 0.09 to 1. In 2018 [21], symmetrical (7level) and asymmetrical (9-level) inverters with less power switching devices based on sinusoidal and modified square PWM were used. The THD of the output voltage for symmetrical and asymmetrical inverter are 16.4% and 15.2%, respectively.…”
