Synchronous tumors arising in a single major salivary gland

Abstract: Multiple separate tumors arising in the major salivary glands are distinctly unusual. The records on 25 patients with synchronous unilateral salivary gland tumors on file at St Louis University and at the Armed literature. Bilateral tumors arose more frequently than multiple unilateral ones. The most common tumors with bilateral synchronous or metachronous development are the Warthin tumors, with more than 100 reported cases; the mixed tumor with at least 34 cases; and the acinic cell carcinoma, with 12 report… Show more

“…Acinic cell carcinomas are most common in the fifth and sixth decades of life but are seen in patients of all ages, including children,13–16 in whom acinic cell carcinomas are the second most common salivary gland tumor after mucoepidermoid carcinoma 17. Acinic cell carcinomas are second only to Warthin's tumor in their incidence of bilateral involvement and multifocal nature 18. In the sinonasal tract, the ages in reported cases range from 42 to 76 years (median, 59 years).…”

“…A 68-yearold patient described by George et al 14 presented with a terminal duct carcinoma 8 years after excision of a pleomorphic adenoma of the ipsilateral parotid gland. In the experience of Gnepp et al, 15 the most commonly seen combination is a Warthin's tumor and carcinoma, while pleomorphic adenomas are infrequently associated with cancers.…”

“…Gnepp et al reported that cases with multiple tumor components account for less than 0.3 % of all salivary gland neoplasms, and almost all of these tumors were benign. 4 Here, we report an extremely rare case of Ca ex PA in a parotid gland that consisted of two carcinoma components.…”
