Synergic effect of recycled cotton fabric and wood saw dust reinforced biodegradable polypropylene composites

Abstract: Hybrid polymer matrix composites of waste cotton fabric and wood saw dust reinforcements were studied with a view to recycling the wastes from garments and carpentry industries. Polymer composites with cotton fabric and wood-saw-dust reinforcements were fabricated using hot press machine. Their physical, thermal and mechanical behaviors were discussed in terms of moisture absorption, thermal stability, tensile strength, elastic modulus, flexural strength and flexural modulus. Compositional analyses of fibers, … Show more

“…Cotton stalks can be used to produce natural cellulose fibres by increasing crop yield in this way cotton crops can be comparable with biofuel. Islam et al 76 developed a composite from recycled cotton fabric and sawdust The mechanical, thermal and physical properties of composites have all been studied. The results show that adding cotton fabric reinforcement increases the tensile and flexural strength of the composites, whereas adding more wood sawdust initially decreases strength before increasing it again.…”

“…For this reason, non-recyclable denims, which have strong and stiff structure, can be used in composite constructions to minimize environmental impact [7][8]. There are many other bio-composite studies of petroleum-based matrix reinforced with different recycled natural fibers in the literature [9][10][11].…”

“…It is mostly found in the primary cell wall of plants, where cellulose molecules are arranged in arrays to form nanofibrils, which in turn associate to form fibers in micro dimensions. Cellulosic fibers have been successfully utilized as reinforcing members in general purpose polymers [9][10][11][12][13]. There have been reports of cellulosic fibers coated with conducting polymers.…”
