Synergistic Mechanism of Photocatalysis and Photo-Fenton by Manganese Ferrite and Graphene Nanocomposite Supported on Wood Ash with Real Sunlight Irradiation

Abstract: The present research aimed to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of reduced graphene oxide and manganese ferrite nanocomposite supported on eucalyptus wood ash waste (WA) from industrial boilers, for the decolorization of methylene blue (MB) solutions, using sunlight as an irradiation source. For this, the photocatalyst named MnFe2O4-G@WA was synthesized by a solvothermal method and characterized by analyzes of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transfo… Show more

“…Analysis of the Mn 2p spectrum identifies distinct peaks at 642.4 eV (Mn 2p 3/2 ) and 655.2 eV (Mn 2p 1/2 ), with a satellite peak at 645.3 eV, unequivocally indicating the presence of Mn 2+ . Conversely, the Fe 2p spectra exhibit characteristic peaks at 711.5 eV (Fe 2p 3/2 ) and 725.2 eV (Fe 2p 1/2 ), accompanied by satellite peaks at approximately 719.5 eV and 733.5 eV, indicative of Fe 3+ cations exclusively (Ferreira et al, 2022;Zhou et al, 2016). Furthermore, the C 1s scan corroborates the presence of Sp 2 carbons inherent to the rGO structure, while the O 1s spectrum delineates lattice oxygen and oxide species within the Pristine MF and MF/rGO-10 composite samples.…”

“…Among these, manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) stands out for its distinctive electronic and magnetic properties, enhanced stability, lower band gap, facile magnetic separability, and non-toxic nature, making it an attractive candidate for numerous applications. In particular, MnFe2O4 has been extensively investigated for its potential in photocatalytic treatment, especially in addressing diverse water contaminants including organic pollutants, synthetic dyes, and plastics (Ferreira et al, 2022;Gupta et al, 2020;Ramadoss et al, 2021).…”

“…The synthesis of GO was performed using the modified Hummers method, as described in previous literature [15][16][17]. In summary, the methodology consisted of the oxidation of graphitic material to obtain graphite oxide, followed by exfoliation of the graphite oxide in water in an ultrasonic bath, resulting in a dispersed GO solution.…”
