“…In-between the two constitutive levels of landscape – the physical structure and the cultural reading and perception – these layers mediate between the phenomena and the semantics: the syntax of landscape. Among others, this implies that the preservation and re-design of legible structures in the environment lies at the core of landscape architecture (Latz, 2018, cp; Weilacher, 2008). All layers, both with empirical and interpretative information, pass through a process of designing (see Schöbel et al , 2013) and lead to a holistic image of landscape.…”

“…The authors drew on a number of publications dealing with heritage conservation and adaptation (Węcławowicz- Gyurkovich, 2020); the conversion of decayed sites into different types of public spaces (Gyurkovich, 2012a), with the preservation of industrial monuments (Hofert Feix, 2014) and the sustainable revitalization of post-industrial areas (Wdowiarz-Bilska, 2011). For each case studied, in addition to our own research, we considered publications that present different aspects of the development of the park areas concerned (Bieske-Matejak, 2005;Gyurkovich, 2016;Sotoca and Carracedo, 2015;Weilacher, 2008),…”

“…A nice example of such a solution is the brownfield conversion site in the German Landschaftspark Duisburg Nord, where landscape architect Peter Latz changed the syntax of a derelict industrial landscape by placing the existing elements in a different narrative framework (Weilacher, 2008) and signs even have to be conserved literally in order to continue their narrative significance. For example, certain land artworks can rescue the narrative significance of particular historically significant structures without preserving them literally, by translating or transposing old structures as narrative elements into new greener materials (trees, ditches) that are no longer dependent on unsustainable land practices, but still carry on the older place narratives that might otherwise get lost.…”
