Syntheses and characterization of neutral complexes of Zn(II) with mono- and dianionic pyrrole-2-imine ligands [(pyrrole-2-CHN)nR]n− (n = 1, 2)

Abstract: The reactions of the dianionic [(pyrrole-2-CH= N),-RJ2-ligands f(N;N2)2-J (R = (R)(S)-1,2-cyclohexane or I,2_ethane) with Zn(H) yield neutral dim eric fZn2 (N; N2 )2 J complexes. The dim eric nature of the complexes was established by fielddesorption mass spectromerry. 'H NMR studies show that these complexes have dime& structures in solution in which the (Iv)zN2)2-ligands act as di-bidenta tes.

“…A dimeric structure for the [Zn 2 L 2 ] complex has been proposed on the basis of mass spectroscopy. [11] We analysed the conformational stability of LH 2 and L'H 2 by PM3 calculations with Gaussian 98. [12] A relaxed potentialenergy scan was made for the N2-C6-C7-N3 torsion angle.…”

“…[17] In addition, no π-interactions are observed between the aromatic rings. n spite of the detailed NMR spectroscopic studies of van Koten on dinuclear zinc complexes with diimine ligands, [24] not many complexes of this kind have been reported. There are some structurally characterised dizinc helical complexes described in the literature, [7,21,23Ϫ31] but only two helicates (one triple-stranded and one double-stranded) contain Schiff bases.…”

“…However, short semirigid or flexible spacers can also give rise to dinuclear complexes. In this way, van Koten described that potential tetradentate Schiff bases, containing cyclohexane or ethane between the N-imine atoms, yield dinuclear boxes with Zn II , Cu II , and Ag I [6]. These short spacers, with two carbon atoms separating the N-imine donors, were then reintroduced by Wild [7] and Fabbrizzi [9], with similar results.…”
