The lack of adequate treatment for the removal of pollutants from domestic, hospital and industrial effluents has caused great environmental concern. Therefore, there is a need to develop materials that have the capacity to treat these effluents. This work aims to develop and characterize an activated charcoal from olive pomace, which is an agro-industrial residue, for adsorption of Nimesulide in liquid effluent and to evaluate the adsorption kinetics and equilibrium using experimental design. The raw material was oven dried at 105 °C for 24 h, ground, chemically activated in a ratio of 1:0.8:0.2 of olive pomace, zinc chloride and calcium hydroxide and thermally activated by pyrolysis in a reactor of stainless steel at 550 °C for 30 min. The activated carbon was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray Diffractometry (XRD), Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) method, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), density and zero charge potential analysis. The surface area obtained was 650.9 m2 g−1. The kinetic and isothermal mathematical models that best described the adsorption were PSO and Freundlich and the highest adsorption capacity obtained was 353.27 mg g−1. The results obtained showed the good performance of activated carbon produced from olive pomace as an adsorbent material and demonstrated great potential for removing emerging contaminants such as Nimesulide.

Advanced functional materials require sophisticated control of particle characteristics. The bottom-up process has been extensively used to produce functional materials for controlling the particle properties of composite particles. We propose crystallization at liquid-liquid interfaces as an advanced particle formation method. This review introduces crystallization at a liquid-liquid interface based on several case studies used in various applications. Conventional crystallization has been generally used to produce crystals and particles with homogeneous particle properties. Liquid-liquid interfacial crystallization makes it possible to create composite particles with hetero-phase structures and interfaces. Liquid-liquid interfacial crystallization with an inkjet technique can control the droplet size accurately, and the shape and particle size distribution are successfully controlled in inorganic-organic composite particles. In addition, we succeed in creating organic-organic composite particles using the interfacial crystallization by an ultrasonic spray nozzle. The coating efficiency of organic particles on the particles is enhanced using the ultrasonic spray nozzle in comparison with anti-solvent crystallization. In this study, the fabrication of inorganic-organic composite particles using a coaxial tube reactor on the liquid-liquid interfacial crystallization is proven successful. These findings suggest that liquid-liquid interfacial crystallization is a promising means of efficiently producing composite particles because of their applicability to infusion in various processes.

Hollow silica particles (or mesoporous hollow silica particles) are sought after for applications across several fields, including drug delivery, battery anodes, catalysis, thermal insulation, and functional coatings. Significant progress has been made in hollow silica particle synthesis and several new methods are being explored to use these particles in real-world applications. This review article presents a brief and critical discussion of synthesis strategies, characterization techniques, and current and possible future applications of these particles.
