Synthesis and Characterization of Composite Coatings for Thermal Actuation

Abstract: The synthesis and thermal expansion of metal coatings containing phase change material ͑PCM͒ prepared by electrolytic deposition were investigated. Such a composite combines the thermomechanical properties of the PCM with the high thermal conductivity of the metal, and can be used as a thermal actuator material. This study used paraffin as the PCM and copper as the metal matrix. The paraffin was first microencapsulated by emulsion polymerization to obtain microcapsules with a diameter of 1-5 m containing 90 vo… Show more

“…73 Particles may, themselves, be two-phase, as in the case of active internal contents which can release in service, e.g. a) liquid lubricants in microcapsules dispersed in a metal deposit, 91,96 precious metal catalyst particles within titanate nanotubes 71 or polyaniline within an anodised film. 72 The majority of specialised composites continue to be used for engineering wear resistance and tribology in aerospace and automotive environments but emerging speciality composites also include: 1.…”

“…Octadecane and butyl stearate both contracted during the crystallization process, leading to dimples appearing on the micro‐PMs. However, the thermal expansion coefficient of butyl stearate is lower than that of octadecane . Therefore, the deformation degree of micro‐PCMs containing butyl stearate is much lower than that of octadecane.…”

“…The phase change temperature of the microcapsule material was about 36℃, the phase change enthalpy was 29.34-63.55 J/g, and the encapsulation rate of neicosane was about 75%. Malfiet et al [41] prepared paraffin microcapsules by interfacial polymerization, followed by electrodeposition of the copper on the surface of the microcapsules, and studied the potential application prospects of this material.
