Synthesis and characterization of novel cross-linking poly(butyl acrylate-co-isobornyl methacrylate) colloids prepared via semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization

Abstract: The novel cross linking (butyl acrylate co isobornyl methacrylate) colloids are prepared via semi continuous seeded emulsion polymerization of butyl acrylate, isobornyl methacrylate and N methylol acry lamide in aqueous phase using mixture of polyethylene glycol mono(octylphenyl) ether and sodium dodecyl sulphate as emulsifier and potassium persulphate as initiator. The optimal composition for preparing the novel cross linking colloid was determined, and the structure of the as prepared colloid was confirmed w… Show more

“…20 Both the absorption of emulsifier molecule onto the surface of latex and the stability of ion and sedimentation are improved by the mixed surfactants of APG1214 and MES. 19 The coagulum percentage is lowest and conversion percentage is highest as shown in Table 2 when the mass ratio of APG1214 to MES is 3:1.…”

“…Thus, the particle size becomes smaller relatively. 19 In addition, in Table 1, it can be seen that the monomer conversion rate is comparatively higher and the coagulum rate is lower when the amount of emulsifier is 7% through the trend of coagulum rate and conversion rate. At the same time, the deposition after high-speed rotation is lowest.…”

“…This dependence is an increasing concern in today’s environmentally conscious society. Due to the anticipated limitations in the crude oil reserves and the design of policy-influencing documents in favor of a biobased and sustainable economy, the industry is forced to seek greater sustainability both in resource and in processes [ 5 , 13 ] without compromising the properties of the end-products [ 14 , 15 , 16 ]. In the past years, several reports on new and more renewable building blocks for PSAs have been published, in particular renewable raw materials that could feasibly be developed for replacing traditional petroleum-based monomers in PSA formulation [ 12 ].…”

“…IBOMA is a 71% biobased monomer coming from pine resin, having the homopolymer a Tg of 150 °C, being suitable as hard monomer. 25,26 The production of those biobased monomers via (trans)esterification from 2octanol and camphene, respectively, with (meth)acrylic acid has been well studied and industrially established. 27−30 Moreover, there are several industrial patents using 2-octyl acrylate as main monomer for PSA formulations 31−33 and 3 M has recently commercialized the Postit Greener Note and the Scotch Magic Greener Tape based on plant derived adhesives (e.g., 2-octyl acrylate). The introduction of IBOMA on PSA waterborne formulations to directly increase the binding strength between adhesive layer and adherent has also been reported.…”
