This paper provides a second update to the review of reversible deactivation radical polymerization achieved with thiocarbonylthio compounds (ZC(=S)SR) by a mechanism of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) that was published in June 2005 (Aust. J. Chem. 2005, 58, 379-410). The first update was published in November 2006 (Aust. J. Chem. 2006, 59, 669-692). This review cites over 500 papers that appeared during the period mid-2006 to mid-2009 covering various aspects of RAFT polymerization ranging from reagent synthesis and properties, kinetics and mechanism of polymerization, novel polymer syntheses and a diverse range of applications. Significant developments have occurred, particularly in the areas of novel RAFT agents, techniques for end-group removal and transformation, the production of micro/nanoparticles and modified surfaces, and biopolymer conjugates both for therapeutic and diagnostic applications.

This review focuses on side-chain functionalized polymers derived from direct (co)polymerization of fluorescent dyes. This overview about polymerizable dyes includes 1,8-naphthalimides, fluoresceins, rhodamines, coumarins, azo-dyes, oxadiazoles, diverse aromatic dyes as well as selected other dyes that cannot be classified within these groups. The discussed dyes have been functionalized with a polymerizable unit in order to apply straight-forward polymerization procedures. Therefore, the center of attention is set to the optical properties of the polymerizable dyes and the applicable polymerization techniques. Furthermore, the various applications (i.e., in biomedicine and pharmacy, as thermo-responsive materials and energy transfer materials, for dispersion of carbon nanotubes and others) of each polymer are discussed.

A new europium complex, Eu (acac)3Aphen (where Hacac and Aphen stand for acetylacetone and 5-acrylamido-1,10-phenanthroline, respectively), was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The ligand Aphen not only serves as an antenna ligand but also offers a functional group for polymer precursor. The room-temperature PL spectra of the europium (III) complex are composed of the typical Eu3+ red emission, assigned to transitions between the first excited state (5D0) and the multiplet (7F04). Compared to Eu (acac)2AA (where HAA is acrylic acid), Eu (acac)3Aphen exhibits greatly enhanced quantum efficiency (i.e., 14.1% vs 28.5%) and longer 5D0 lifetime (260 μs vs 568 μs).
