Synthesis and characterization of some novel fatty acid analogues: A preliminary investigation on their activity against human lung carcinoma cell line

Abstract: BackgroundPreparation of some novel heterocyclic compounds with long alkyl and alkenyl chain of cytotoxic activity.MethodsGamma linolenic acid, a poly unsaturated fatty acid and stearic acid, a saturated fatty acid were isolated from the microalga Spirulina platensis. Some novel gamma linolenic acid and stearic acid analogues having 1,3,4-oxadiazole and 1,2,4-triazole were synthesized and characterized by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectral analysis. Cytotoxicity of these compounds was evaluated by the growt… Show more

“…The compounds show the strongest antitumour activity [22]. Earlier, the author of the present chapter has reported some novel fatty acid heterocyclic conjugates and their anticancer evaluation on human lung carcinoma cell lines [23,24]. The compounds have shown comparable cytotoxicity towards human lung carcinoma cell lines.…”

“…Chemistry Earlier we reported (Jubie et al, 2013) antitumor activity of fatty acid analogues SA-1, SA-2, GLA-1 and GLA-2 against human lung carcinoma cell lines. In the present investigation, fatty acid analogues SA-7, PA-1, PA-2, PA-4, PA-5, LA-1 and LA-2 were also synthesised as per our reported methods (Jubie et al, 2013(Jubie et al, , 2012b.…”

“…Many commercial methods are available for producing gamma linolenic acid (GLA) concentrates include winterization, fractional distillation, urea-inclusion, high performance liquid chromatography and argentated silica gel chromatography [ 4 7 ]. Even though GLA concentrates mentioned above are sufficient for most applications; however pharmaceutical applications of GLA require higher concentrations of GLA, often in excess of 90 % but many of these methods did not produce the satisfied output [ 8 ]. Hence new method for producing higher concentrations of gamma linolenic acid and its ester forms from Spirulina platensis are urgently needed.…”
