Synthesis and Characterization of the Tris(methylthio)sulfonium Salt [(CH3S)3S]+SbF6-1

Abstract: CH 3 S) 3 S] + SbF 6 -, the first example of a trithiosulfonium salt saturated with organyl groups, was prepared from SH 3 + SbF 6and CH 3 SCl and characterized by 1 H, 13 C NMR, infrared, and Raman spectroscopy. The colorless salt is stable up to 10 °C, but solutions in SO 2 decompose at -60 °C in a few hours. The structure of the cation was studied by ab initio calculations and a normal coordinate analysis based on four additional isotopic derivates [(CH 3 34

“…Ions 88 are irreversibly transformed into 89 upon raising the temperature. Minkwitz et al 250 have obtained tris(methylthio)sulfonium hexafluoroantimonate in a solventless reaction at low temperature [Eq. Dialkyl-and diarylsulfoxides also yield two ions reacting with NO 2 þ (90 and 91).…”

“…Among them, the bis-sulfenylation and hydroxysulfenylation of allylbenzene derivatives to prepare synthetically useful vicinal dithioethers are attracting increasing attention due to their synthetic utility in drug development and fine chemical synthesis . Previously reported sulfur etherification reagents mainly focused on alkyl and aromatic sulfides, such as thiol, sulfonyl hydrazides, disulfides, sulfonamides, sulfenyl halides, sulfenate esters, (methylthio)-sulfonium salts, and sodium methanethiolate . In particular, Lei and co-workers developed the first efficiently electrocatalytic dehydrogenative C–H/S–H cross-coupling construct C–S bond, which was the use of the aryl/heteroaryl thiols and electron-rich arenes as reaction substrates .…”
