Synthesis and Characterization of Transition Metal Complexes with

Abstract: The Schiff bases namely MIMFMA, MIMTMA and MIPMA have been prepared by reacting 3-amino-5-methyl isoxazole with 5-methyl furan-2-carboxyaldehyde, 5-methyl thiphene-2-carboxaldehyde and pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde. The Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II) and VO(IV) have been prepared by reacting metal chlorides with those Schiff bases in an alchololic medium. The complexes are electrolytes in DMSO. These have been characterized by using elemental analysis, IR, UV-VIS, 1 H, 13 C, mass spectra, magnetic susceptibility, … Show more

“…All the Schiff base ligands possessed potential donor sites such as the azomethine linkage (―C═N), triazole ring nitrogen (―C═N) and furanyl (―C―O) group, which have a tendency to coordinate with the metal ions. The IR spectra of all the ligands exhibited bands at 3180–3190, 1607–1609, 1020–1025 and 1080–1090 cm −1 , respectively, assigned to the vibrations (N―H), (C═N), (N―N) of triazole moiety and (―C―O) of the furanyl ring. The ligands L2 and L3 showed bands at 830 and 1370 cm −1 , respectively, assigned to the (C―Cl) and (C―NO 2 ) groups.…”

“…The results obtained are explained on the basis of Overtone's concept and chelation theory. [31,32] The variation in the activity of different complexes against different organisms depends either on the impermeability of the cells of the microbes or difference in ribosomes of microbial cells. The results show that the antibacterial and antifungal activities of ligands may be significantly enhanced on chelation with transition metal ions.…”

“…The most important infrared spectral bands that provide conclusive structural evidence for the coordination of the ligands to the central metal ions are given in the Table 2. The ligand shows a strong band at 1623 cm -1 characteristic of ν(C=N ) stretching vibration 9 , but in complexes, the azomethine frequency shows a marked downfield or up field shift indicating coordination through N atom 10 . Generally the 1R spectra of the free ligands show a broad band around 3416 cm -1 which can be attributed to NH stretching vibration of benzimidazole moiety.…”
