“…Crystalline oligothiophenes are found to be nearly planar due to large packing effects; [23][24][25] however, torsions between adjacent thiophene rings can occur in the gas phase as is the case for bithiophene, where a 35°dihedral angle is measured between the two rings 26 while a ϳ30°angle is calculated from high-level correlated ab initio calculations 27 ͑the dihedral angle between adjacent rings is estimated at ϳ26°at the AM1 level͒. As also stressed in the case of oligo͑phenylenevinylene͒s, 10 the choice of planar conformations is validated by the appearance upon doping of a quinoid character in the rings that forces the systems to adopt more planar conformations, and by the results of ab initio calculations that indicate no significant changes in the optical properties up to torsion angles around 30°-40°.…”
