“…Poly­(ionic liquids) are materials prepared by the polymerization of ionic liquids and as a consequence contain ionic species as part of the polymer chain. Because of this, poly­(ionic liquids) have expanded the properties and applications of ionic liquids in various directions, such as in stimuli-responsive materials, gas separation/storage/transport, electrochemistry, and biorelated research. , Incorporation of either or both of the cationic and/or anionic moieties in the polymer chain may result in various polyionic architectures, that is, polycationic, polyanionic, amphoteric, and zwitterionic polymers, with various physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. Poly­(ampholytes) and zwitterionic ionic liquid polymers, in which both the cation and the anion are fixed in the polymer chain, are especially interesting as they contain no free ions, which ensures that devices based on these materials have good long-term stability. Such materials would be ideal for the preparation of humidity-responsive photonic materials based on the structural color, provided that some form of structural element can be added to them. Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) could provide such structural elements, as they are able to selectively reflect one handedness of circularly polarized light due to the presence of a helical molecular organization, with the reflected wavelength being proportional to the length of the helical pitch, which is the distance of one full director rotation .…”
