Pr-doped BaTi4O9 crystals were grown by the floating zone method, and their optical and near-infrared (NIR) radioluminescence (RL) properties were investigated. The photoluminescence and RL properties observed comprised several sharp peaks around 630 nm due to 4f–4f transitions of Pr3+ ions. In the NIR range, strong emission peaks around 1100 nm were confirmed, and the RL intensity of 1.0% Pr-doped crystals was the highest among the prepared crystals. The minimum sensitivity of the detector was 0.3 Gy h−1 for the 1.0% Pr-doped crystal.

The improvement of photocatalytic activity of BaTi 4 O 9 to overall H 2 O splitting was investigated. From the evaluation of co-catalysts, Rh 0.7 Cr 1.3 O 3 was preferable. However, this co-catalyst was degrading with the progress of the photocatalytic reaction. When CoO x was co-loaded as the co-catalyst for O 2 evolution reaction over the surface, the steady progress of the photocatalytic reaction can be confirmed. Here, effective way and condition for loading CoO x cocatalyst as well as effective preparation method of BaTi 4 O 9 were demonstrated in order to improve the photocatalytic activity of BaTi 4 O 9 with Rh 0.7 Cr 1.3 O 3 and CoO x co-catalysts to the overall H 2 O splitting. As the results, the photocatalyst prepared by preferable method and condition showed high photocatalytic activity to the overall H 2 O splitting, where the apparent quantum yield (AQY) at 313 nm reached to 41 %.

Global warming, energy deficiency, and environmental deterioration triggered by burning fossil fuels, may severely impair economic development and human life and health. Green solar power, mechanical energy, and temperature fluctuation heat energy abound in nature and are readily accessible. Thanks to various appealing characteristics, titanates are universally employed to harvest these sustainable energy sources to produce renewable fuels through photocatalysis, piezocatalysis, and pyrocatalysis, alleviating above serious issues. In this review, the research progress in energy catalysis driven by solar light, mechanical stress, and temperature fluctuation over titanates is comprehensively described. It starts with the classification and introduction of diverse titanates. Next, the main methods for preparing titanates are introduced. Highlighted are titanates acting as cocatalysts, photocatalysts, piezocatalysts, and pyrocatalysts to participate in water splitting reaction for H 2 evolution and atmospheric CO 2 reduction conversion into CO or hydrocarbons. In particular, the material modification strategies for improving photocatalytic performance are discussed. Finally, the rosy prospects of the future development of energy catalysis application for titanates are looked into.
