Synthesis and properties of cyclic diester based aliphatic copolyesters

Abstract: Melt polycondensation was used to prepare a systematic series of random and amorphous copolyesters using the following cycloaliphatic diesters: dimethyl‐1,4‐cyclohexane dicarboxylate (DMCD), dimethyl bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane‐1,4‐dicarboxylate (DMCD‐1), dimethyl bicyclo[2.2.2]octane‐1,4‐dicarboxylate (DMCD‐2), dimethyl bicyclo[3.2.2]nonane‐1,5‐dicarboxylate (DMCD‐3), 1,4‐dimethoxycarbonyl‐1,4‐dimethylcyclohexane (DMCD‐M) and the aliphatic diols: ethylene glycol (EG) and 1,4‐cyclohexane dimethanol (CHDM). The polym… Show more

“…In the second step, DMCD is further hydrogenated to CHDM. The cis/trans ratio of CHDM is different depending on the catalyst [ 12 , 13 ]. CHDM is polymerized with terephthalic acid to form a linear polyester, poly(1,4-cyclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate), with improved hydrolytic, chemical, electrical properties, as well as enhanced thermal properties [ 14 ].…”

“…Consequently, T g raises and desirable physical-mechanical properties can be obtained. [3,4] The comparison between the glass transition temperatures of poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) and poly-(butylene 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) (PBCHD), whose chemical structure is reported in Scheme 1, can be significant. The T g values are -58 8C for PBA [5] and vary from -10 to 18 8C for PBCHD, [6] i.e., difference of about 50-80 8C.…”

“…Increasing the trans/cis ratio of the cyclohexylene unit enhances the crystallization rate. Other 1,4‐cyclohexylene ring containing polycarbonates and polyesters, such as poly(1,4‐cyclohexylenedimethylene 1,4‐cyclohexanedicarboxylate), and poly(butylene 1,4‐cyclohexanedicarboxylate), have also been widely reported in the literature 16–21. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no report of trans ‐1,4‐cyclohexylene ring containing PAESs.…”
