The spray pyrolysis technique has been extensively used to synthesize materials for a wide variety of applications such as micro and sub-micrometer dimension MOSFET´s for integrated circuits technology, light emitting devices for displays, and solid-state lighting, planar waveguides and other multilayer structure devices for photonics. This technique is an atmospheric pressure chemical synthesis of materials, in which a precursor solution of chemical compounds in the proper solvent is sprayed and converted into powders or films through a pyrolysis process. The most common ways to generate the aerosol for the spraying process are by pneumatic and ultrasonic systems. The synthesis parameters are usually optimized for the materials optical, structural, electric and mechanical characteristics required. There are several reviews of the research efforts in which spray pyrolysis and the processes involved have been described in detail. This review is intended to focus on research work developed with this technique in relation to high-K dielectric and luminescent materials in the form of coatings and powders as well as multiple layered structures.

A series of ZnB2O4 phosphors doped with different concentrations of Eu and Dy (0.05 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 mol%) and co‐doped with Ce (1, 2, 5, 7, 10 mol%) respectively was prepared via the solid‐state reaction technique and the thermoluminescence (TL) behaviour of gamma ray‐irradiated samples was studied. The synthesized samples were irradiated with γ‐rays for the dose range 0.03–1.20 kGy. The TL intensity variations with dose, dopant concentration, and the effect of co‐doping were studied. The TL response curves for ZnB2O4:Eu3+ and ZnB2O4:Dy3+, ZnB2O4:Eu3,Ce3+ and ZnB2O4:Dy3+,Ce3+ phosphor were observed. It was revealed that ZnB2O4:Eu3+ showed a linear TL behaviour for the dose 0.03–1.20 kGy and ZnB2O4:Dy3+ showed linearity for the gamma dose range 0.03–0.10 kGy. Furthermore, fading for all the samples was observed to be less than 10% for a storage period of 30 days. In addition to this, the trapping parameters, especially activation energies were evaluated using the Ilich method and the initial rise method. The activation energy values obtained from both methods were in complete agreement with each other.

The optical absorption of zinc tetraborate at different concentrations of the terbium impurity (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8 mol%) was analyzed. The radioluminescence (RL) emission spectra was obtained after beta irradiation of a 90 Sr/ 90 Y source. The RL spectrum showed the characteristics bands of Tb 3+ with two main emissions at 489 nm and 546 nm which corresponding to the 5 D 4 → 7 F 6 and 5 D 4 → 7 F 5 transitions respectively in this ion. The OSL and TL characteristics have been analyzed. The stimulation blue light (497 nm) of a diode laser at 500 mA was used to bleach the thermoluminescent (TL) signals obtained with 5Gy of 60 Co source. The two main glow peaks (79 and 161 °C) are sensitives under 497 nm stimulation, and they were shifted to higher temperature values and faded their TL intensities. Similar behavior of TL glow curves before and after OSL stimulation with blue light was observed when the samples were exposed to 30 Gy gamma dose of 137 Cs irradiator. The OSL signal response was linear with the dose range of 1-10 Gy and increased their response up to 200 Gy gamma dose. The OSL shows a bleaching sensitive shallow traps and diminishing the intensity of the TL glow curves remaining a complex traps distribution. The RL, TL and OSL properties were investigated in Zn(BO 2) 2 :Tb 3+ phosphor.
