Synthesis and swelling behaviors of semi‐IPNs superabsorbent resin based on chicken feather protein

Abstract: A novel chicken feather protein-g-poly (potassium acrylate)/polyvinyl alcohol (CFP-g-PKA/PVA) semi-IPNs superabsorbent resin (SAR) based on feather protein, acrylic acid (AA), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was synthesized by graft copolymerization and semi-interpenetrating technology. The results from FTIR, SEM, and TGA analysis showed that both CFP and PVA reacted with PKA during the polymerization process. The effects of AA, PVA, initiator and crosslinker content on water absorbency of semi-IPNs SAR were studi… Show more

“…Moreover, the wall of the N 5 D 1 W 0 hydrogel was thicker than that of the N 5 D 1 W 17 hydrogel [Figure (b)]. The microporous structure and thin wall of the N 5 D 1 W 17 hydrogel increased the surface area and was conducive to water infiltration into the hydrogel network . It was confirmed by the subsequent swelling kinetics experiments.…”

“…However, higher LANP contents (LANPs 10% /SPA) offered more cross-linking points, whereas the available free volume within the network decreased. Besides, the elasticity of the polymeric network of the SAP decreased, which was also responsible for the decrease in WAC …”

“…Besides, the elasticity of the polymeric network of the SAP decreased, which was also responsible for the decrease in WAC. 39 The effects of reaction time on the WAC of gel are shown in Figure 4e. Except for LANPs 5% /SPA, the water absorption of other gels enhanced with the prolonged polymerization time.…”

“…However, when the content of APS was higher than 0.8 wt%, the number of active free radicals generated increased [36]. This caused the reaction intensi ed, the chain segments between the cross-linking points of the polymer became shorter, and the network structure of the polymer became more di cult to expand [37]. Therefore, the water (salt) absorbency was lower.…”
