Synthesis and thermal properties of modified room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber using polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) as a cross linking agent

Abstract: Incompletely condensed tetra-silanol-phenyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (TOPO) was synthesized first and then copolymerized with hydroxy terminated polydimethylsiloxane (HPDMS) as a cross linking agent to prepare room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber (TOPO–PDMS).

“…The FTIR spectra of both CeO 2 NPs and the AgNC/CeO 2 nanocomposite (see Figure S1 in the Supporting Information) show a broad peak in the range 3300–3500 cm –1 due to adsorbed water molecules. A very weak band at 1159 cm –1 arises from the P=O functional group of TOPO . A weak band at 718 cm –1 can be assigned to the Ce–O bond stretching vibration .…”

“…However, polysiloxanes start to degrade around 200 8C, especially poly(dimethyl siloxane) undergoes dramatic thermal degradation above 300 8C [1,2]. Many efforts have been made to improve the high-temperature thermal stability of silicones, such as adding inorganic additive [2], increasing crosslink density [1] and incorporating rigid group (e.g., phenyl and imide heterocycle) [3,4]. The inorganic additives are not compatible with silicones, and the processing problems with blending technique still exist [1].…”

“…The second method of increasing crosslink density with polymethylmethoxysiloxane as crosslinker is only applicable to silicones vulcanized by free radical polymerization. So the last method has attracted more and more attention in recent years [3,4]. However, all these rigid groups are derived from the petrochemical route.…”

“…Recently, several groups used different kinds of vinyl POSS derivatives to vulcanize silanol terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) by hydrolytic condensation reaction or to react with hydride PDMS by addition‐type reaction as cross linking agents . The enhancement effect of POSS on mechanical properties, thermal stability and hardness was exhibited in comparison with pristine silicone rubber counterpart.…”
