Synthesis, Characterization and NH3/N2 Gas Permeation Study of Nanocomposite Membranes

Abstract: Carbon nanotubes have exceptional mechanical properties which make them very attractive for the development of composite membranes. In this research, NH 3 /N 2 gas permeation behavior of flat sheet composite membranes was examined. The cellulose acetate-multiwalled carbon nanotubes composite membranes were synthesized using solution casting method. The morphology and dispersion of carbon nanotubes were observed through SEM. However, the composite membranes were also characterized using several analytical techn… Show more

“…Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have attracted increasing attention for NH 3 separation in recent years because of the synergistic effect of both polymer and porous components [ 198 200 ]. Raza et al [ 201 ] introduced carboxylic group-functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (COOH-MWCNTs) into a CA/PEG polymer matrix, which notably increased the permeability of NH 3 and N 2 owing to the enhanced voids and free volume. In addition, HKUST-1/PVDF MMMs were exploited by Cohen et al [ 202 ] because HKUST-1 can bind with ammonia via Lewis acid–base interactions.…”

“…The development of ILs with outstanding features also provides opportunities to design novel materials for gas separation like porous materials and membranes. , In particular, membrane technology is one prospective candidate compared with other energy-extensive separation approaches. , Polymers such as cellulose acetate, fluorinated polymers, and block copolymers were applied for preparing NH 3 separation membranes, of which block copolymers showed superior performance. For example, Makhloufi et al studied NH 3 separation performance of fluorinated membranes, but the selectivities were not satisfying. Later, Ansaloni et al developed sulfonated block copolymer membranes with tuned microstructures, and the membrane primarily consisting of lamellae exhibited NH 3 permeability of 473 Barrer and NH 3 /N 2 selectivity of 591.…”
