Synthesis of a cellulose supported chain transfer agent and its application to RAFT polymerization

Abstract: A new route for the homogeneous synthesis of cellulose‐based RAFT agents is proposed. The resulting cellulose‐supported RAFT agent is used to mediate the polymerization of N‐isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAAm), and yields cellulose‐graft‐Poly(NIPAAm).

“…The disadvantage of such CTAs is the tedious synthetic process. Perrier et al [170,171,173,187] ever synthesized two CTAs with phenyl or methanethiol group, and they offered good control over the living polymerization of St, MA, DMA and MMA polymerization, by comparison to more classic RAFT agents such as cumyl Scheme 5. Representative CTAs in RAFT of cellulose.…”

“…Hansson et al 27 used ATRP to prepare cellulose-g-PMMA by grafting from a macroinitiator immobilised on a solid cellulose substrate. Semsarilar et al 28 were the first to report the use of RAFT in combination with a cellulosic material; a hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) macro-CTA was used in the RAFT polymerisation of Nisopropylacrylamide (NIPAAM) and ethyl acrylate. Compared to the "grafting from" approach, however, "grafting to" has the significant advantage that it allows the full characterisation of both the grafts and the cellulose backbone prior to the coupling reaction.…”
