Monomers possessing two functionalities suitable for polymerization are often designed and utilized in syntheses directed to the formation of cross-linked macromolecules. In this review, we give an account of recent developments related to the use of such monomers in cyclopolymerization processes, in order to form linear, soluble macromolecules. These processes can be activated by means of radical, ionic, or transition-metal mediated chain-growth polymerization mechanisms, to achieve cyclic moieties of variable ring size which are embedded within the polymer backbone, driving and tuning peculiar physical properties of the resulting macromolecules. The two functionalities are covalently linked by a "tether", which can be appropriately designed in order to "imprint" elements of chemical information into the polymer backbone during the synthesis and, in some cases, be removed by postpolymerization reactions. The two functionalities can possess identical or even very different reactivities toward the polymerization mechanism involved; in the latter case, consequences and outcomes related to the sequence-controlled, precision synthesis of macromolecules have been demonstrated. Recent advances in new initiating systems and polymerization catalysts enabled the precision syntheses of polymers with regulated cyclic structures by highly regio- and/or stereoselective cyclopolymerization. Cyclopolymerizations involving double cyclization, ring-opening, or isomerization have been also developed, generating unique repeating structures, which can hardly be obtained by conventional polymerization methods.

Oily wastewater from industries has an adverse impact on the environment, human and aquatic life. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane modified with a zwitterionic/hydrophobic pentapolymer (PP) with controlled pore size has been utilized to separate oil from water from their nano-emulsions. The PP has been synthesized in 91% yield via pentapolymerization of four different diallylamine salts [(CH2=CHCH2)2NH+(CH2)x A−], bearing CO2−, PO3H−, SO3−, (CH2)12NH2 pendants, and SO2 in a respective mol ratio of 25:36:25:14:100. Incorporating PP into PVDF has shown a substantially reduced membrane hydrophobicity; the contact angle decreased from 92.5° to 47.4°. The PP-PVDF membranes have demonstrated an excellent capability to deal with the high concentrations of nano-emulsions with a separation efficiency of greater than 97.5%. The flux recovery ratio (FRR) of PP-5 incorporated PVDF membrane was about 82%, which was substantially higher than the pristine PVDF.

Ammonium persulfate‐initiated cyclopolymerization of maleic acid (HO2CC=CCO2H) (MA) with diallylamine (–NR2, R = CH2 = CH‐CH2) derivatives (DADs): R2NH+CH2CO2− (I), R2NCH2CO2−Na+ (II), R2NCH2CO2Et (III), R2NH+(CH2)3CO2− (IV), R2N(CH2)3CO2Et (V), R2NH+(CH2)3SO3− (VI) and R2N(CH2)3SO3−Na+ (VII) gave a series of new pH‐responsive alternate copolymers: –[(DAD‐alt‐MA)]n– VIII‐XIV, respectively. Homopolymers XV and XVI of the corresponding monomers IV and V·HCl were also synthesized. The evaluation of the synthesized polymers as potential antiscalants in reverse osmosis (RO) plants was examined. An effective scale inhibitor must arrest the formation of scale for a residence time (≈15 min) of feed water in the RO chamber. R2NH+(CH2)3CO2− (IV)‐alt‐MA copolymer XI at a concentration of 5 ppm imparted 99% scale inhibition for 360 min, while at 2.5 and 1 ppm concentrations, the CaSO4 scale inhibitions were found to be 99% and ≈ 100% during 120 and 20 min, respectively, at 40°C. Homopolymers XV and XVI, at a 20‐ppm concentration, demonstrated ≈ 95% efficiency in inhibiting mild steel corrosion in 1 M HCl. In some important oilfield applications, requirement of simultaneous scale and corrosion inhibition make these polymers potential candidates for desalination and oilfield applications.
