A series of fluorine-containing amphiphilic ABC triblock copolymers comprising hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA), and hydrophobic poly(p-(2-(4-biphenyl)perfluorocyclobutoxy)phenyl methacrylate) (PBPFCBPMA) segments were synthesized by successive atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, PEG-Br macroinitiators bearing one terminal ATRP initiating group were prepared by chain-end modification of monohydroxy-terminated PEG via esterification reaction. PEG-b-PBPFCBPMA-Br diblock copolymers were then synthesized via ATRP of BPFCBPMA monomer initiated by PEG-Br macroinitiator. ATRP polymerization of tert-butyl methacrylate (tBMA) was directly initiated by PEG-b-PBPFCBPMA-Br to provide PEG-b-PBPFCBPMA-b-PtBMA triblock copolymers with relatively narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.43). The pendant tert-butyoxycarbonyls were hydrolyzed to carboxyls in acidic environment without affecting other functional groups for affording PEG-b-PBPFCBPMA-b-PMAA amphiphilic triblock copolymers. The critical micelle concentrations (cmc) were determined by fluorescence spectroscopy using N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine as probe and the self-assembly behavior in aqueous media were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Large compound micelles and bowl-shaped micelles were formed in neutral aqueous solution. Interestingly, large compound micelles formed by triblock copolymers can separately or simultaneously encapsulate hydrophilic Rhodamine 6G and hydrophobic pyrene agents.

Cationic emulsions of triblock copolymer particles comprising a poly(n-butyl acrylate) (P n BA) central block and polystyrene (PS) outer blocks were synthesized by activator generated by electron transfer (AGET) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Difunctional ATRP initiator, ethylene bis(2-bromoisobutyrate) (EBBiB), was used as initiator to synthesize the ABA type poly(styrene-b-n-butyl acrylate-b-styrene) (PS-P n BA-PS) triblock copolymer. The effects of ligand and cationic surfactant on polymerizations were also discussed. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was used to characterize the molecular weight (M n ) and molecular weight distribution (MWD) of the resultant triblock copolymers. Particle size and particle size distribution of resulted latexes were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS). The resultant latexes showed good colloidal stability with average particle size around 100-300 nm in diameter. Control over geometric curvature and chirality of assemblies in pure aqueous media is key to the design of responsive materials and molecular machines. Here we show how aggregate geometric curvature and chirality of motor amphiphiles could be switched from bicontinuous calabashes to nanoribbons or from vesicles to nanoribbons by modulating rotor orientation direction with dual light/heat stimuli to influence spontaneous curvature in assemblies. The photoisomerization and thermal helix inversion processes of molecular motors have been studied at the molecular level, and the transformation of supramolecular assemblies has been investigated at the microscopic level. The morphological evolution of the calabash-shaped assembly can be kinetically captured, suggesting that the bicontinuous calabash-shaped structures are different from the bowl-shaped aggregates based on solvent-driven assembly upon the addition of non-solvent or solvent. The investigation of dual optical/thermal control of rotor orientation can provide a new strategy for tuning the geometric curvature and chirality of nanoassemblies at the nanoscale, arriving ultimately the clusteroluminescence through-space electronic communication at responsive supramolecular nanosystems.
