Synthesis of carrageenan/multi-walled carbon nanotube hybrid hydrogel nanocomposite for adsorption of crystal violet from aqueous solution

Abstract: A novel polysaccharide-based hydrogel nanocomposite was prepared using grafting of acrylic acid (AA) on to kappa-carrageenan (κC) by incorporating multi-walled carbon nanotube (MCNT). In fact, MCNTs were used as nano-sized reinforcements in the synthesized nanocomposite. Spectroscopy together with morphology proved relatively strong κC-MCNT interaction. Besides, the swelling behavior of the nanocomposite hydrogel was studied. The results showed that in the presence of MCNTs, the equilibrium swelling capacity w… Show more

“…These values are comparable to other results reported in the reference literature, for CV sorption on other types of hydrogels: 49.0 mg/g (poly (acrylic acid) hydrogels) [81]; 105.2 mg/g (carrageenan/multi-walled carbon nanotube hybrid hydrogel) [82] and 16.3 mg/g (κ-carrageenan hydrogel beads) [83].…”

“…It was seen that the adsorption capacity of nanocomposites varies with multiwalled carbon nanotube (MCNTs) concentration and agitation time as well as the pH of solution. The maximum adsorption capacity of CG/MCNTs hybrid hydrogel nanocomposite was found to be 118 mg/g [ 83 ].…”
