Synthesis of Chitosan-Silver Nanoparticle Composite Spheres and Their Antimicrobial Activities

Abstract: Synthesis of silver nanoparticles–chitosan composite particles sphere (AgNPs-chi-spheres) has been completed and its characterization was fulfilled by UV–vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and zetasizer nano. UV–vis spectroscopy characterization showed that AgNPs-chi-spheres gave optimum absorption at a wavelength of 410 nm. The XRD spectra showed that the structure of AgNPs-chi-spheres were crystalline and spherical. … Show more

“…Amide B bands appeared mainly du −1 The additional peak observed with a lower intensity that appeared at 2 theta of 22 • was due to the presence of the capping agent from the Kepok banana peel extract. The X-ray diffraction pattern also confirmed the formation of silver nanoparticles, consistent with earlier reports [51][52][53].…”

“…According to the diameter of inhibition zone obtained in this study, modified hand sanitizer gel with chitosan had a greater impact on S. aureus than on E. coli bacteria. Similar results were obtained (Table 4) by Nithya et al [69] and Mirda et al [52] using a nanocomposite product, as well as by Ahmad et al [66], using a produced hydrogel. The effect occured because S. aureus is a gram-positive bacterium with a simple, single-layered cell wall structure with low lipid content, enabling bioactive compounds to penetrate the cells.…”

“…In another study, Ahmad et al overcame poor AgNP adhesion by pretreating cellulosic filter paper with chitosan. [14] The authors credited the chitosan (a known stabilizing unit for AgNPs [15,16] ) as the critical component responsible for retaining the AgNPs, which were then used as a heterogeneous catalyst for nitroarene reduction. While both studies developed cellulose as an AgNP support, there remains a demonstrable need for a simple process to fabricate nonderivatized all-cellulose supports that can integrate and retain AgNPs for catalysis.…”
