a Molecular imprinting technology (MIT), often described as a method of making a molecular lock to match a molecular key, is a technique for the creation of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with tailor-made binding sites complementary to the template molecules in shape, size and functional groups. Owing to their unique features of structure predictability, recognition specificity and application universality, MIPs have found a wide range of applications in various fields. Herein, we propose to comprehensively review the recent advances in molecular imprinting including versatile perspectives and applications, concerning novel preparation technologies and strategies of MIT, and highlight the applications of MIPs. The fundamentals of MIPs involving essential elements, preparation procedures and characterization methods are briefly outlined.Smart MIT for MIPs is especially highlighted including ingenious MIT (surface imprinting, nanoimprinting, etc.), special strategies of MIT (dummy imprinting, segment imprinting, etc.) and stimuli-responsive MIT (single/dual/ multi-responsive technology). By virtue of smart MIT, new formatted MIPs gain popularity for versatile applications, including sample pretreatment/chromatographic separation (solid phase extraction, monolithic column chromatography, etc.) and chemical/biological sensing (electrochemical sensing, fluorescence sensing, etc.). Finally, we propose the remaining challenges and future perspectives to accelerate the development of MIT, and to utilize it for further developing versatile MIPs with a wide range of applications (650 references).

A novel method for selective adsorption of indole using magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) as the adsorbent is proposed in this work. The MMIPs were synthesized by microemulsion polymerization, using Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles as the magnetically susceptible component, acrylamide as the functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker and indole as template molecule. The products obtained were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry and thermogravimetric analysis. The adsorption performances of MMIPs were investigated by batch adsorption experiments in terms of selective recognition, adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms, respectively. The maximum amount of adsorption on MMIPs occurs at approximately 120 minutes. The results indicate that MMIPs possess high adsorption capacity for indole. The adsorption fits with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model.

The extraction of Congo red from aqueous media is reported by a synthesized magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer. This polymer was prepared by coating of synthesized molecularly imprinted polymer on pre-prepared amino-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@NH2-SiO2) surface. Coating process was done through the chemical coprecipitation method by use of acrylamide as functional monomer, N, N' methylenebisacrylamid as cross-linking agent, ammonium persulfate as initiator and N, N, N', N'-tetramethylethylenediamine as co-initiator in the presence of Congo red. The polymer was characterized by Field emission scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, vibrating sample magnetometer, X-ray diffraction, and re-binding experiments. In addition, more investigations were performed including isotherms, adsorption kinetics, competitive adsorption and reusability. The results proved the sensitivity of the prepared polymer toward magnetic field. Accordingly, it can be easily removed by an external magnet. It demonstrated effective recognition selectivity as well as ability to simultaneous separation and enrichment of Congo red.
