Synthesis of dendritic silver nanostructures by means of ultrasonic irradiation

Abstract: In this paper, a simple and effective route for the synthesis of silver dendritic nanostructures by means of ultrasonic irradiation has been developed. Well-defined silver dendritic nanostructures were obtained by sonicating the aqueous solution of 0.04mol/L silver nitrate with 4.0mol/L isopropanol as reducing agent and 0.01mol/L PEG400 as disperser for 2h. The effects of the irradiation time, the concentration of Ag(+) and the molar ratio of PEG to AgNO(3) on the morphology of silver nanostructures were discu… Show more

“…By the action of ultrasound, the formation, growth and implosive collapse of bubbles occur in the liquid medium. The collapse of bubbles generates localised hot spots with transient temperature of about 5000 K, pressure of about 1000 atm, and cooling rate of over 109 K/s [87]. Such specific condition, to a large extent, facilitates the far-from equilibrium growth of metal nanostructures dramatically [72].…”

“…Xiao et al [53] reported the synthesis of silver dendritic nanostructures using Raney nickel template with the assistance of ultrasonic waves. Wang et al [87] developed a preparation of well-defined silver dendritic nanostructures from AgNO 3 aqueous solution in the presence of isopropanol and PEG by using ultrasonic irradiation without any template. Generally, at the beginning of the reaction, only silver spherical nanoparticles were obtained.…”

“…Thus, morphology-controlled synthesis of semiconductor nano/micro structures has been the topic of intensive investigation in recent years [1]. Sonochemical method, which allows the rapid synthesis of many inorganic materials under ambient conditions, has been recently investigated as a promising alternative technique for the fabrication of inorganic materials that exhibited controllable nano/micro structures [2][3][4][5][6]. It depends on the cavitation effects which are produced by collapsing bubbles in liquids [7][8][9].…”

“…The various methods have been actively explored for the synthesis of 1D nanomaterials, including wet chemical reduction, the polyol-based process, ultraviolet irradiation photoreduction technique and electrochemical and sonoelectrochemical techniques [11][12][13][14][15][16]. For instance, silver nanorods had been synthesised by irradiating an aqueous AgNO 3 solution with ultraviolet light [17], or by reducing AgNO 3 with N-N 0 -dimethyl formamide in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol [18].…”
