Among many kinds of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs), Fe-based BMGs with good magnetic properties, high strength and low materials cost should have great potential for wide variety of applications. However, the glass-forming metal elements such as Al, Ga, Nb, Mo, Y and so forth in the Fe-based BMGs significantly decrease saturation magnetization (J s ) which is a essential property as soft magnetic materials and also increase the material cost.The coexistence of high Fe content and high glass-forming ability (GFA) has been earnestly desired from academia to industry. We report a novel Fe 76 Si 9 B 10 P 5 (at%) bulk metallic glass with unusual combination of high J s of 1.51 T due to high Fe content and high GFA leading to a glassy rod with a diameter of 2.5 mm despite not-containing any glass-forming metal elements. This alloy composed of familiar and low-priced elements, also exhibiting very excellent magnetic softness and rather high strength, has a great advantage for engineering and industry, and thus should make a contribution to conservation of earth resources and environment through energy saving.

ABSTRACT. Fast cooling of 10 6 K/s, according to the melt-spinning method, led to the Fe73.5Cu1Nb3Si15.5B7 amorphous alloy formation. X-ray diffraction analysis method (XRD) showed that the obtained alloy is in amorphous state. The differential scanning calorimetry method (DSC) has defined the temperature interval of the crystallization process to be from 510ºC to 540ºC. The same temperature interval has also been confirmed by measuring electrical resistivity dependence over temperature. The heating of alloy sample in the temperature interval from 25ºC to 600ºC, leads to structural changes in the alloy under the thermal influence. Structural relaxation and crystallization processes have been investigated by thermoelectromotive force measurement (TEMF) of thermocouple amorphous alloy -copper. Based on the change in temperature coefficient of TEMF thermocouple annealed at various temperatures, relative changes in electron state density near Fermi level have been determined. It has been shown that the changes in normalized magnetic permeability in correlation with appropriate structural changes, which cause changes in electron state density near Fermi level.

Abstract:In this study, change in glass forming ability (GFA) and thermal stability of Co-Fe-based bulk metallic glasses were investigated as a function of iron content. Cylindrical samples of alloys with diameters of up to 4 mm were synthesized by a suction casting method in an arc furnace. Structures and thermal properties of the as-cast samples were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. It was found that the critical casting thickness of the alloys reduced as iron content was increased and cobalt content was decreased. It was determined that GFA parameters, reduced glass transition temperature (T g /T l ) andshow a very good correlation with critical casting thickness values. It was also observed that changing iron content did not effect thermal properties of the alloys.
