Synthesis of Hydroxy-Sodalite/Cancrinite Zeolites from Calcite-Bearing Kaolin for the Removal of Heavy Metal Ions in Aqueous Media

Abstract: A hydroxy-sodalite/cancrinite zeolite composite was synthesized from low-grade calcite-bearing kaolin by hydrothermal alkali-activation method at 160 • C for 6 h. The effect of calcite addition on the formation of the hydroxy-sodalite/cancrinite composite was investigated using artificial mixtures. The chemical composition and crystal morphology of the synthesized zeolite composite were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and N 2 adsorption/desorption… Show more

“…From raw to treated materials, samples become highly enriched in Na content, which confirms the formation of thermonatrite. SEM images of hydrothermal samples seem to be similar to the homogenous pseudohexagonal crystal of hydroxy-sodalite generated at almost the same experimental conditions by Esaifan et al (2017Esaifan et al ( , 2019 [67,68]. However, despite other zeolites having been identified in low amounts by XRD, no clear characteristic morphology of these crystals has been observed in SEM.…”

“…The hydrothermal treatment caused mineral phase transformations. Quartz and the mullite phase present in the coal fly ash sample changed to a zeolite structure (concretely sodalite—23.68% and phillipsite ((Ca,K,Na) 1-2 (Si,Al) 8 O 16 ·6(H 2 O)—2.28%, see Table 5 ) [ 6 , 30 ]. The amount of mullite decreased from 18.11 to 5.38%.…”

“…However, it always depends on the type and properties of the coal fly ash. The amount of zeolite phases formed is influenced by parameters such as type and composition of the coal fly ash, concentration and type of chemicals (NaOH, KOH, LiOH, H 2 SO 4 , HCl), temperature, process time, Si/Al, and liquid/solid (L/S) ratio [ 30 ].…”

“…Oleh karena itu dibutuhkan upaya untuk meningkatkan daya serap kaolin. Salah satu upaya peningkatan daya serap kaolin sebagai adsorben dapat dilakukan dengan memodifikasikanya menjadi metakaolin (fase metastabil dari kaolin) dilanjutkan dengan aktivasi dengan basa sehingga membentuk struktur menyerupai zeolit [18] [19]. Metakaolin merupakan mineral lempung kaolin dalam bentuk terdehidrasi.…”
