Synthesis of Magnetite Nanoparticles by Top‐Down Approach from a High Purity Ore

Abstract: This study attempts to synthesize magnetite nanoparticles from a high purity natural iron oxide ore found in Panvila, Sri Lanka, following a novel top-down approach. Powder X-Ray diffraction, elemental analysis, and chemical analysis data confirmed the ore to be exclusively magnetite with Fe2+ : Fe3+ratio of 1 : 2. Surface modified magnetite nanoparticles were synthesized by destructuring of this ore using a top-down approach in the presence of oleic acid. These oleic acid coated nanoparticles were further dis… Show more

“…Top Down and Bottom up approach are the two approaches from which NPs can be synthesized (Figure 2 (Fig. 2) ) (Priyadarshana et al, 2015[ 44 ]). Top down approach includes sputtering, etching, mechanical milling, and electro-explosion while bottom up approach includes two main methods from which the NPs are synthesized i.e.…”

“…Due to technical and economic limitation, only limited works has carried out on producing ICNs through top down approach. Top down approach involves breaking down the magnetically separated gangue free bulk iron material into nanometre scale fragments through mechanical means (Yan, Lien et al 2013, Priyadarshana, Kottegoda et al 2015. Due to several limitations in the top down method, the bottom up approach was much favoured and adored for its easy control and cost effectiveness.…”

“…In the extract of C. vulgaris, a green algea used in the synthesis of shape/size controlled haxagonal and triangular gold nanoparticles and which were used as bioreduction. The study of heavy metal biosorption by different algae presented that brown algae are superior as compared to another autotrophs and algae [26].…”
