a b s t r a c tSensors based on two neutral ionophores, N,N -bis((1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methylene)cyclohexane-1,2-diamine (L 1 ) and 3,3 -(cyclohexane-1,2-diylbis(azan-1-yl-1-ylidene)bis(methan-1-yl-1-ylidene)bis(5-hydroxymethyl)pyridine-2-ol) (L 2 ) are described for quantification of neodymium (III). Effect of various plasticizers; 2-nitrophenyloctylether (o-NPOE), dibutyl butylphosphonate (DBBP), tri-n-butyl phosphates (TBP), dioctylpthalate (DOP) and chloronapthalen (CN) and anion excluder, sodiumtetraphenylborate (NaTPB) has been studied. The membrane composition of PVC:o-NPOE:ionophore (L 1 ):NaTPB (w/w; mg) of 150:300:5:5 exhibited best performance. The sensor with ionophore (L 1 ) exhibits significantly enhanced selectivity towards neodymium (III) in the concentration range 5.0 × 10 −7 to 1.0 × 10 −2 M with a detection limit of 1.0 × 10 −7 M and a Nernstian compliance (19.8 ± 0.3 mV decade −1 of activity) within pH range 4.0-8.0. The response time of sensor was found as 10 s. The influence of the membrane composition and possible interfering ions has also been investigated on the response properties of the electrode. The fast and stable response, good reproducibility and long-term stability of the sensor are observed. The sensor has been found to work satisfactorily in partially non-aqueous media up to 20% (v/v) content of methanol, ethanol or acetonitrile and could be used for a period of 3 months. The selectivity coefficients determined by using fixed interference method (FIM) indicate high selectivity for neodymium. The proposed electrode shows fairly good discrimination of neodymium (III) from other cations. The application of prepared sensor has been demonstrated in the determination of neodymium (III) in spiked water samples.

This review presents a general overview about the development of ion-selective electrodes in Iran during the past decade (1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006). All of the reported ion-selective sensors (for cations, anions and organic species) are cited in this review. Sensors for 39 cations, 12 anions, and 23 organic compounds and drugs have been reported in this reivew. Some of the main group cations (e.g. beryllium) as well as most of the lanthanide ion (i.e., presidium, erbium, lutetium, cerium, neodymium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, ytterbium, and thulium) sensors have been reported for the first time. It is noticable that the best reported sensors for HPO 4 2-, SO 4 2-, Cl -, ClO 4 -, Br -, and I 3 -have been designed and constructed by the Iranian researchers.

Este trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de um eletrôdo de membrana de PVC, que contém 3-{[2-oxo-1(2H)-acenonaftilideno]amino}-2-tioxido-1,3-tiazolidino-4-ona (ATTO), que mostrou ser seletivo para íons Sm 3+. Os dados obtidos mostram uma resposta Nernsteniana com inclinação de 19,3 ± 0,6 mV por década para íons Sm 3+ em uma ampla faixa de concentração , de 1,0 × 10. O limite de detecção encontrado foi (5,5± 0.3) × 10 -7 mol L -1 numa faixa de pH entre 3,5 e 7,5, com tempo de resposta pequeno (~10 s). O sensor potenciométrico mostrou boa seletividade para diferentes cátions, como os alcalinos, alcalinos terrosos e para íons de metais pesados. This paper introduces the development of an original PVC membrane electrode, based on 3-{[2-oxo-1(2H)-acenaphthylenyliden]amino}-2-thioxo-1,3-thiazolidin-4-one (ATTO) which has revealed to be a suitable carrier for Sm 3+ ions. The resulting data illustrated that the electrode shows a Nernstian slope of 19.3 ± 0.6 mV per decade for Sm 3+ ions over a broad working concentration range of 1.0 × 10 -6 to 1.0 × 10 -1 mol L -1 . The lower detection limit was found to be equal to (5.5± 0.3) × 10 -7 mol L -1 in the pH range of 3.5-7.5, and the response time was very short (~10 s). The potentiometric sensor displayed good selectivities for a number of cations such as alkali, alkaline earth, transition and heavy metal ions.
