“…The sintered pellet was 10 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness. The Eu:YSAG powder produced this way is highly sintering active, and can be sintered to high transparency at 1800°C without adding SiO 2 , which was used as a sintering additive by Ikesue and colleagues 5,6 . Sintering in H 2 helps to remove the pore, but it also leads to the reduction of Eu 3+ into Eu 2+ ions, which is unwanted in this case.…”

“…Ikesue and Sato 5 reported that they have fabricated Pr‐doped YAG transparent ceramics. They stated that Pr 3+ ions can be doped into the ceramic lattice because of the difference in the structure relaxation between the ceramics and single crystals, or the dissolution of the Si element into the YAG lattice.…”

“…This type of nano‐structured ceramics cannot be prepared by the conventional ceramics processing based upon sintering of powders. The transparent poly crystalline ceramics by sintering of powders are composed of much larger grains with above μm sizes like “Lucalox™” 3 or PLZT 10 and YAG, 4–5,8,12 etc. Some “Glass Ceramics” are transparent, particularly optical and photonic glasses ceramics like PYROCERAM, 31 NEOCERAM, 32 and photosensitive glass, 33 photo chromic glass, 34 etc.…”

“…Since those heterogeneities can hardly be removed in polycrystalline ceramics, most ceramics are opaque or translucent but not transparent. Intensive research has been performed to fabricate transparent polycrystalline ceramics 3–12 . Famous “Lucalox™” polycrystalline alumina ceramics 3 appeared to be the first success by controlling (a) the grain size to be homogeneous for tens of micrometers and (b) no pores in the grain boundaries.…”
